Matthew 26 Part 10 – Jesus On Trial Before The Jews (Pt.1)

Matthew has condensed his account of Jesus’ “Trial” before the Jewish leadership, leaving us the impression that all was carried out before Caiaphas, whereas in reality Jesus was first taken to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the actual High Priest that year. But of course the two of them were in cahoots to have Jesus condemned. The big question was, how they would pin the death penalty on Jesus, “legally”! Was there ever anything that Jesus had said that could be used against Him? It was difficult for the Jewish leaders to find any viable false witnesses, but at last two did come forward, and yet even then their testimonies didn’t line up exactly. But the claim was made that Jesus had spoken about destroying The Temple and then rebuilding it. What is most interesting is that this was a veiled Messianic Claim, and anyone versed with Messianic Predictions would have known that The Messiah would of necessity Rebuild The Temple – but why Rebuild unless the one presently standing was somehow destroyed? So you see why this point was pivotal in the Jewish leader’s claim against Jesus!
