This first part of Matthew 2 should be familiar to us, as we have heard it read and acted out at countless school or church nativity plays. But there is so much more detail to be found in the text. God is actively drawing both Jews and Gentiles to Jesus, as He will save His people from their sins (Matt.1:21), and they will come and worship Him. This is the second part of Matthew 1. Not only is Joseph commanded to name “his son” JESUS and take Mary home to be his wife, but we are told that a prophecy is being fulfilled from Isaiah 7:14. Joseph will name “his son” JESUS, but the people will call Him “Immanuel” which means, “God With Us!” Jesus has come to “Save HIS PEOPLE from their sins” (Matt.1:21), but a big question is, “Who are HIS PEOPLE?” If we say, Israel, then what does that say about everyone else who is non Jewish? Won’t......

We realise that reading a list of genealogies isn’t that interesting to most of us, unless we are big into history and family trees. But for Matthew, he felt the need to demonstrate the historicity of the Lord Jesus Christ. Matthew traced Jesus lineage all the way back to David, and even further back to Abraham. In today’s sermon we only covered vv.1-17, and no doubt may have to come back to these verses. But, this message will help as a springboard into the rest of what Matthew has to say in......

Whatever circumstances that we face in life as a Christian, we can be confident because “we know” that all thingswork together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose (See Rom.8:28). Today we briefly considered the life of Joseph and how although his own brothers plotted evil against him, God was at the same time meaning or planning it for good (See Gen.50:20). Later we saw that the events that unfolded in the Life and Death and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ were what He had foretold, and were also fulfilling ‘the determined purpose and foreknowledge......

We weren’t expecting another Psalm today, but we were able to squeeze one more into the series. Commentators are unsure as to the circumstances of David writing this “Michtam”, but there are at least two possibilities: David was facing an incurable or deadly disease that had attacked his flesh. Therefore he speaks of God being the one who will keep him safe. He also says his flesh has hope, and that the LORD will show him the path to life or the way to life, or the way back to health (v.11a). David was prophesying......

In this Psalm David asks a couple of question in v.1, which he takes the rest of the Psalm to answer. Actually when David asked, “LORD, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill?” he was referring to some of the earthly dwelling places of God, and ultimately to God’s heavenly abode. But who can dwell or abide there? David then lists a few of the things that would be required of such a person (See vv.2-5b), and which are basic requirements for living as an Israelite under the......

How many times have you come across people who say, “There is no God!” ? We have met them especially when doing street evangelism. But why do people deny the existence of God? we believe that Ps.14:1 reveals the answer. It is because they are corrupt and love their sinful lives! Of course we were all once like that, as was the whole earth in the days of Noah (See Gen.6:5, 11-12), and yet in the midst of it all we read that Noah found or obtained Grace from the LORD (Gen.6:8). We have every reason......

Have you ever wondered why prayers are taking so long to be answered? Ever wondered why you can’t sense the presence of the LORD? David did. He asked 4 times in Ps.13:1-2 “How long?” But by the end of this short psalm, in vv.5-6 he ends on a brighter note: “But I have trusted in Your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because He has dealt bountifully with me.” If David could say that under the Old Covenant, how much more should we be able to sing and......

Look around you today and maybe like David you’ll be concerned because of a lack of godly men and women, and a scarcity of the faithful! Where have they gone? Have they disappeared? Maybe we just need to come forth and let our light shine in the midst of this darkened world. Yes we are held or kept and preserved by the power of God (See Psalm 12:7; John 10:26-30), but whilst we are still in this world, we need to share our blessed hope with others who have no hope! To watch......
